After 13 years, the conservatorship that held international pop star singer Britney Spears hostage, has been terminated.

Though Spears has been in the public eye for multiple years, she has recently been increasingly discussed in multiple media outlets due to the revamping of the “Free Britney” movement. The “Free Britney” movement was started by Spears’ fans who believe she wanted the conservatorship her father held over her eliminated. The speculation stems from various sources such as sources speaking out and social media posts from the singer and those around her. The most recent revamping of discussion surrounding Spears can be attributed to an anonymous message from a lawyer from the initial conservatorship case. This anonymous message stated a concern for Spears, mobilizing the involvement of many who may not have even known about the “Free Britney” movement. 

Since this anonymous message, there have been many more related posts on social media outlets, and protests by fans, even causing Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn Spears to become involved. Jamie Lynn Spears replied to these posts  asking that people do not speak for Britney as they do not know her. However, many fans have speculated that Jamie Lynn Spears is trying to keep Britney Spears held under this conservatorship so that she can benefit from her sister. This speculation comes from the fact that Jamie Lynn Spears is a beneficiary of Britney Spears’ wealth currently and that she has tried to become Britney Spears’ sole conservator in the past. Since she stands to gain from someone else controlling her sister’s finances, it is difficult for some to take her words at face value.

In fact, many sources actually report that Britney Spears does not support the conservatorship, such as The New York Times. This later appeared to be the case when Britney Spears expanded her legal team to fight the conservatorship. While a Los Angeles Court initially rejected terminating it on Friday, Judge Brenda Penny of the Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled that it be ended. This ruling will help Britney Spears regain control over her life.

Before this decision, Britney Spears was held under a conservatorship by her father which gave him control over her estate as she was deemed unfit to do so on her own; however, ending the conservatorship takes away the legal power given to her father. While the public does not know much about how he exercised his power, many sources close to Britney Spears, including her mother and friends, stated that they think she lacks proper control over her own life. Taking away the legal power given to her father, grants her more self agency. 

With many sources reporting that Britney Spears does not support the conservatorship and most people close to her concerned about her agency, many fans are happy with Judge Penny’s ruling.
